Ten things to do with Broadband

Ok, so we tried to keep it down to 'five' things. But there's so much we couldn't fit it in. So, now it's 10-ish things.

1. Watch Movies & TV

It started with music. Now it's movies. Download them with your broadband. Watch them on your computer, or even 'live' on a webpage. Unbelievable when you think about it. With the right gear you can beam them to your widescreen TV. VHS - takes you back doesn't it? Try www.tv-liks.co.uk for starters.

2. Download Music

Way easier than a bus trip to the high street. Grab a whole album in a few seconds, with broadband. You even get a picture of the album-cover included in the music files. www.apple.com/itunes and www.napster.com, were some of the first out there, but there are loads. Do a search yourself and you'll see.

3. Kids' Homework

Kids get sent home these days with a lot of homework that's best done with the help of the internet. It's just amazing for researching pretty much anything you need to know. Clever thing is, there are loads of websites that make learning dull stuff fun, like playing a video game. It's even been known for kids to ask to do their homework. Yes, really. www.bbc.co.uk/schools/games/ is a good place to start.

4. Banking

Set-up standing orders, look at your statements, move money around, pay bills... Do it online. It's quicker than going to the bank.

5. Online Gaming

It's huge now. Sony Playstation, Microsoft Xbox, are broadband compatible. Now when you play games you're not just playing against a computer, you're playing against 'real' people all over the world.

Some online games are free and take place in huge artificial worlds or universes, with thousands of players online at the same time. If this is your thing, you might want to check out www.pardus.at, or www.secondlife.com.

6. Share your connection

It's good to share. Now you can. A broadband connection's fast enough for more than one person to use at once. So the kids can do their homework (or play games) whilst mum's browsing the online shoe store and everything stays nice and fast.

7. Social Networking

Take a look at www.facebook.com and www.myspace.com. Make friends from all around the world. Share ideas. Network like you never could before. Stuff like this is changing the world.

8. Photos

Remember camera film? Exactly.

Digital is it these days and the web was made for it:

Take your shots, publish them online for the whole world to see, or just your mates.

No more 'popping off to the chemist' with your film.

Order prints right from your gallery and they arrive in the post. Sweet. Check out www.photobox.co.uk or www.flickr.com.

9. Reference

You can research anything on the internet. Play with www.wikipedia.com, the online encyclopaedia for the world, by the world. It's amazing. You can even add an entry about yourself, if you want.

10. News & Sport

Pretty much all newspapers are online for free.

Broadband's a great way to keep up to date with sports scores as and when they happen (and moan about your team to other fans).

10-ish BLOGS

Got to squeeze these in. Like an online diary that other people join in with - really big at the moment.

Shopping

There's probably nothing you can't now buy from the internet. We love all those websites out there that shop around for you to find the best price: (www.pricegrabber.com and www.pricerunner.com are two that come to mind).

Still want to give your local shop the business? Easy. Use the internet to do your research. Save time wandering around when you're out shopping.

OK, that's enough, for now. Get out there on broadband and discover it all for yourself.
